The Central Mining Institute (GIG) in Katowice (Poland) created in 1945, is a governmental scientific-research unit engaged in problems of mining engineering, safety in mines and environmental protection in the hard coal mining sector. The multidirectional activities of the Institute comprise the following fields:
- mining engineering, geology and hydrogeology,geophysical engineering
- combating of natural and technical hazards in mining and industry
- upgrading and utilization of minerals
- monitoring and environmental protection on areas of mining exploitation, especially industrial waste management
- certification of equipment and materials
The staff of Central Mining Institute is over 500 employees, including over 400 graduates, 120 of them holding PhD or DSc degrees.
In past 3 years Central Mining Institute participated in the realization of many research ans implementation projects funded by European Programmes, e.g.:
- 5th Framework Programme; projects: RECOPOL, NESMI, AIRPIPE, ARAMIS, MASURIN, RESCUE, TENORMHARM, ERRICCA2, METROPOLIS
- 6th Framework Programme; many projects are in evaluation phase, examples of those already accepted: SHAPE-RISK, ISCC, WATERNORM
- Leonardo da Vinci; projects: EMAS, FORMET
- Structural Funds
- Coal & Steel Research Fund
