Trachy (Poland, NUTSII: PL22)

Area: 350 hectares, rural, near the edge of industrial region Suspected sources of groundwater pollution: 3 landfills of different size and type of waste with unknown contribution to groundwater pollution

Landfill area Trachy (Upper Silesia, Poland) consists of three landfills: one huge coal mining waste dump and two small ones, for galvanic waste and municipal waste. Those landfills are causing significant groundwater pollution of Usable Groundwater Aquifer (UGWA) "G?rna Odra". The main pollutants are:

  • SO4, Cl, Fe, Mn (caused probably by mining waste landfill, severe pollution)
  • Ni, Pb, Cd (of unclear origin, temporary exceeding limits)

It is suspected, that main contamination plume is heading towards Trachy village. Although village has a water supply system, most of people still have private wells there, and some of them are still using the water from these wells.

This pilot project is expected to work out a concept for landfill rehabilitation aiming at abatement of groundwater pollution of Usable Groundwater Aquifer (UGWA) "G?rna Odra" caused by landfill area Trachy. Guidelines for technical and legal implementation of INCORE methodology for typical Polish landfill areas will be also provided.
